Dear Friends,
Like
the tree on this page, a quick glance outside reveals that splashes of the reds,
golds and browns of the fall season have already popped
up around the area, even as the coolness of the last few nights and early
mornings catch us by surprise and starts the debate as to how early can we turn
on the heat!
The
tree on this page is the logo for this year’s Consecrating Stewards Program,
titled “Saint’s Alive! Living Generously” with a focus on I Corinthians 16:1-4.
Following the format we have used the last few years, our two witnessing
stewards, Elmer Schallenberg and Kathy Nace will share in worship of how God has
worked in their lives, in the church and in the world. Their stories are a
testimony to a God who has given us an abundance of time, talent, treasure and
“trees.”

At
the end of the service, Rev. Danney will lead us in a quiet and prayerful time
in which we will be asked to offer to God our giving commitments for the coming
year. The celebration will continue with a brunch in Fellowship Hall. Please
RSVP to the invitations that will be included in the weekly bulletins.

Children’s
Community Services
Though the calendar says it
is Fall, the weather still makes us think summer! There are changes happening that confirm that
the year is moving along. There are lots of acorns, black walnuts and leaves
starting to fall.
Our preschool four year olds
have been apple picking and using the apples in all sorts of ways. They have
printed, tasted red, yellow and green apples, graphed their favorite
ones and made very delicious apple sauce. The children in the three year old
program are well on their way discovering new friends, adjusting to being in a
classroom on their own and getting ready to take on lots of new challenges.
Last week was our first
Parent and Tot class. There were rave reviews on all that happened.
Our Parent Association is in
the process of forming and the co-chairs have already gotten together and are
offering a “Fall Festival” on Oct. 30th. They plan to hold this event at
meet and enjoy some fun activities.
We will be offering

Nominations for 2012
The Nominating Committee requests us to prayerfully
consider who God is calling in our midst to serve on the 2012 consistory as an
Elder or Deacon. If you would like to suggest a name to the Committee, complete
the form below and submit it to the church office or give it to one of the
committee members: Don Porter, Barbara Harty, Maryann Fellin or Liz Alexander. Deadline
for submitting names is November 6th. The slate will be presented to Consistory for
approval and the names will then be published in the bulletin. Elections will
be held at a congregational meeting in the beginning of December.
The RCA Book of Church Order states: Nominees must be at least 21 years old and a
confessing member.
At the discretion of the consistory a nominee may be
18 years old.
The office
of the elder, together with the other installed elders and the installed
minister/s, is to have supervision of the church entrusted to them. They have
charge of all matters relating to the welfare and good order of the church.
They have oversight over the conduct of the members of the congregation and
seek to bring that conduct into conformity with the Word of God. Elders
exercise an oversight over the conduct of one another, and of the deacons, and
of the minister/s. They make certain that what is preached and taught by the
minister/s is in accord with the Holy Scripture. They assist the minister/s
with their good counsel and in the task of visitation. They seek to guard the
sacraments of the church from being profaned. An elder may administer the
sacraments, if authorized by the board of elders.
The office
of deacon is one of servanthood and service after the example of Christ. In
the local church deacons are chosen members of spiritual commitment, exemplary
life, compassionate spirit, and sound judgment, who are set apart for a
ministry of mercy, service, and outreach. They are to receive the contributions
of the congregation and distribute them under the direction of the consistory.
The deacons give particular attention and care to the whole benevolence program
of the church. They have charge of all gifts contributed for the benefit of the
poor and distribute them with discretion. They visit and comfort those in
material need and perform such other duties as the consistory may assign them.

Sweet
fellowship marks Orahovica church visit
By Nancy
Titus
Yesterday, we spent a wonderful family day
in Orahovica, a small town about an hour away from our home. Eric preached at
the Pentecostal church there, and we enjoyed the rest of the day having
fellowship with the pastor and his wife while also feeding ourselves on the
beauty of God’s creation.
One of the greatest
privileges of the day was praying for the people of the church as they came
forward. We were honored to do so, and humbled, as one after another asked for
the Lord to clear out anything in their lives that kept Him from being the
center.
Time spent with Pastor
Slobodan and his wife, Lidija, was as invigorating as the hike up to the base
of the “Rose City,” which is the ruins of a 14th century castle.
Once you make the climb, you can stand on a look-out at the bottom of the
castle and look down over the city of
Slobodan was raised in
Orahovica, a picturesque city of about 4,500 named for the walnuts that grow
profusely there. He grew up racing up and down the mountain, swinging on the
vines, and enjoying the outdoor life through every season. Much of the antics
of our trek up the mountain was about how accustomed to it, and incredibly fit
Slobodan, at the age of 50 is. Lidija told us how even this past summer, young
guys challenged Slobodan to soccer games with great boasting before the game
and very little to say afterwards!
All along the way from the
church to the lake to the castle and back, Slobodan spoke to every single
person we met, encouraging them and joking with them in his natural out-going
way. The joy of the Lord flows out from him to anyone within his line of sight
and being in his presence – even with our limited conversational skills since
he doesn’t speak English – was a pleasure itself!
Orahovica’s beautiful
setting makes it a drawing place. All third graders from our part of
The Pentecostal church also
has used the natural beauty of Orahovica to foster the spread of the gospel
through summer camps it runs. Many of today’s church leaders point to the
significance of their attendance at these camps decades ago when they were
young people in their conversion and/or spiritual development.
Renovation of the camp
facilities has been one of the major mission projects of the denomination during
our tenure here in
Please pray for Slobodan
and Lidija, for their ministry to the people of Orahovica, for the people of
their church and for the camp ministry. Among the challenges they face is the
huge problem of unemployment, which is leading many young people to leave the
town. The lack of funds also is a huge burden as the church tries to reach out
to those with little hope. Pray that God will supply everything they need so
that the gospel can flourish for the glory of Jesus.
Eric and Nancy Titus are
RCA missionaries in Osijek, Croatia, where they work at the Evangelical
Theological Seminary and with the Reformed Christian Church in Croatia. They
have three children: Samuel, 17, Valerie, 13, and Penny, 11.
