Dear Friends,

Like the tree on this page, a quick glance outside reveals that splashes of the reds, golds and browns of the fall season have already popped up around the area, even as the coolness of the last few nights and early mornings catch us by surprise and starts the debate as to how early can we turn on the heat!

The tree on this page is the logo for this year’s Consecrating Stewards Program, titled “Saint’s Alive! Living Generously” with a focus on I Corinthians 16:1-4. Following the format we have used the last few years, our two witnessing stewards, Elmer Schallenberg and Kathy Nace will share in worship of how God has worked in their lives, in the church and in the world. Their stories are a testimony to a God who has given us an abundance of time, talent, treasure and “trees.”

Rev. Thomas Danney, our guest preacher for Consecration Sunday, served many years at the Reformed Church in Nyack, and currently serves as the Regional Synod Area Minister for the Mid-Hudson Classis. He is a valuable resource for our area churches and will meet with the consistory in October and share his thoughts and challenges as we prepare for Consecration Sunday which will be held on Sunday, November 6th. (To allow adequate time for all, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Communion on the second Sunday, November 13th.)

Prior to that day, the Consistory calls us to prayerfully discern how God is leading us in our giving to the ministry of Jesus Christ, here in Fishkill and to the ends of the world.. Following this letter is a weekly percentage giving guide that some have found helpful and a sample giving card that will be handed out on Consecration Sunday. We hope that when we gather for worship on Consecration Sunday, under our theme of “Saints Alive! Living Generously,” we will all be prepared to respond as the Lord leads.

At the end of the service, Rev. Danney will lead us in a quiet and prayerful time in which we will be asked to offer to God our giving commitments for the coming year. The celebration will continue with a brunch in Fellowship Hall. Please RSVP to the invitations that will be included in the weekly bulletins.

Dear First Reformed Church Friends,

Thank you so much for your support, your visits, and your cards during our Mom’s hospitalization and nursing home stays, and especially for your kind words and comfort after her passing. She so loved being a part of the First Reformed Church family and looked forward to spending her Sunday mornings with you all.

We miss her each and every day but it has been such a blessing to hear your  Marion” stories

and to know she held a special place in your hearts too.

With love,

The Serra family

       Notes from September Consistory Meeting

·  Deacon John Houston led devotions with a theme of faith. It is through the eyes of faith that we are called to look at the present, even when the challenges are great, such as dementia and death of loved ones.  Isaiah 55:8-11 reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways.

·   Treasurer’s Operating Report shows August revenues totaling $11,073 and expenses totaling $14,893.

·  The 300th Anniversary Steering Committee:  Co-chairs Jan Melichar Utter & Ray VanVoorhis, Ruth Porter, Roy Carruthers, and Willa Skinner.

·   Food Pantry has served 221 families in August which equaled 10,035 meals. This is almost double the amount reported in February. The deacons have designated the Food Pantry for the Thanksgiving Offering.

·  Our sanctuary is designated as the Emergency Offsite location for Fishkill Elementary School.

·  The DuBois House is scheduled for new windows and siding in October. The labor cost for installation of siding is being donated by the company installing the windows and the siding itself is being donated by the manufacturer.

·  Next regular Consistory meeting is October 25th, 7:15pm.

Hedgewood Sock Drive

The Women of the Church will again be providing a pair of socks for each resident at the Hedgewood

Adult Home in Beacon.  We need 125 pair for men and 75 pair for women. Please help us meet this

goal. You may leave socks in the church or the DuBois House. We will be wrapping them at our November

meeting, so we would appreciate it if you would leave them by November 13. We also could use any

extra new Christmas cards you might have, since we also give a candy cane and a card with each pair of

socks. You may leave them with the socks in the same container.  Thank You!

Children’s  Community  Services

Though the calendar says it is Fall, the weather still makes us think summer!  There are changes happening that confirm that the year is moving along. There are lots of acorns, black walnuts and leaves starting to fall.

Our preschool four year olds have been apple picking and using the apples in all sorts of ways. They have

printed, tasted red, yellow and green apples, graphed their favorite ones and made very delicious apple sauce. The children in the three year old program are well on their way discovering new friends, adjusting to being in a classroom on their own and getting ready to take on lots of new challenges.

Last week was our first Parent and Tot class. There were rave reviews on all that happened.

Our Parent Association is in the process of forming and the co-chairs have already gotten together and are offering a “Fall Festival” on Oct. 30th.  They plan to hold this event at Geering Park as a way for families to

meet and enjoy some fun activities.

We will be offering Developmental Screenings for children between the ages of 4 months and 5 years. This valuable service is being provided by Astor Early Childhood Programs and the United Way of Dutchess County. This is a free service and a valuable way for families to measure their child’s growth and the important milestones in their physical, mental and social development.

October is the month for fire inspections, alarm system inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, and the

Dutchess County Department of Health inspection. As you can see, along with our  “normal”  busyness,

this will be a very active time in our Education Building.

Dutchess Outreach 2011 Coat Drive and Giveaway

                                           Sponsored by Guardian Self Storage

Each year Dutchess Outreach distributes thousands of warm coats to our neighbors in need, all over

Dutchess County, and they need your help to do it.  The dates of the coat collection are October 1- 31.

All coats should be clean and in good condition. Please do not donate any coats that cannot be worn

due to poor condition. Winter coats and jackets in children and adult sizes, (especially children’s and men’s plus sizes) are being collected; Light weight jackets and clothes cannot be accepted. However, this year due to the flooding caused by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, sweaters and fleece jackets will be accepted.

If possible, please sort and bag coats by type: children, adult-women, and adult-men. It would be very helpful if the bags are labeled as well (e.g. 5 boys)  Please drop off coats at any Guardian Self  Storage location no later than Nov. 3rd.

All coats will be distributed in November, at giveaway locations throughout Dutchess County. Volunteers

are needed to help move, sort and organize coats for the giveaway locations on Sat. Nov. 5, at the Family Partnership Center in Poughkeepsie (morning and early afternoon shifts available). To volunteer, call Mary Dynes (845) 532-6520 or Carol Beck at Dutchess Outreach (845) 454-3792. For coat giveaway dates and locations, please check the website:  www.dutchessoutreach.org or call the Dutchess Outreach office at

(845) 454-3792.   Thank you for helping our neighbors in need.

 Consistory Nominations for 2012

The Nominating Committee requests us to prayerfully consider who God is calling in our midst to serve on the 2012 consistory as an Elder or Deacon. If you would like to suggest a name to the Committee, complete the form below and submit it to the church office or give it to one of the committee members: Don Porter, Barbara Harty, Maryann Fellin or Liz Alexander. Deadline for submitting names is November 6th.  The slate will be presented to Consistory for approval and the names will then be published in the bulletin. Elections will be held at a congregational meeting in the beginning of December.

The RCA Book of Church Order states: Nominees must be at least 21 years old and a confessing member.

At the discretion of the consistory a nominee may be 18 years old.

The office of the elder, together with the other installed elders and the installed minister/s, is to have supervision of the church entrusted to them. They have charge of all matters relating to the welfare and good order of the church. They have oversight over the conduct of the members of the congregation and seek to bring that conduct into conformity with the Word of God. Elders exercise an oversight over the conduct of one another, and of the deacons, and of the minister/s. They make certain that what is preached and taught by the minister/s is in accord with the Holy Scripture. They assist the minister/s with their good counsel and in the task of visitation. They seek to guard the sacraments of the church from being profaned. An elder may administer the sacraments, if authorized by the board of elders.

The office of deacon is one of servanthood and service after the example of Christ. In the local church deacons are chosen members of spiritual commitment, exemplary life, compassionate spirit, and sound judgment, who are set apart for a ministry of mercy, service, and outreach. They are to receive the contributions of the congregation and distribute them under the direction of the consistory. The deacons give particular attention and care to the whole benevolence program of the church. They have charge of all gifts contributed for the benefit of the poor and distribute them with discretion. They visit and comfort those in material need and perform such other duties as the consistory may assign them.

  Croatia Update

Sweet fellowship marks Orahovica church visit

                                                                                               By Nancy Titus

Yesterday, we spent a wonderful family day in Orahovica, a small town about an hour away from our home. Eric preached at the Pentecostal church there, and we enjoyed the rest of the day having fellowship with the pastor and his wife while also feeding ourselves on the beauty of God’s creation.

One of the greatest privileges of the day was praying for the people of the church as they came forward. We were honored to do so, and humbled, as one after another asked for the Lord to clear out anything in their lives that kept Him from being the center.

Time spent with Pastor Slobodan and his wife, Lidija, was as invigorating as the hike up to the base of the “Rose City,” which is the ruins of a 14th century castle. Once you make the climb, you can stand on a look-out at the bottom of the castle and look down over the city of Orahovica and across to the mountains in Pecs, Hungary, about 50 miles away. The view is worth the effort of the climb. Up a little farther is the castle itself, and traipsing around its old walls fills the mind with possibilities as thoughts go back to those who lived there centuries ago and what happenings the crumbling walls stood witness to.

Slobodan was raised in Orahovica, a picturesque city of about 4,500 named for the walnuts that grow profusely there. He grew up racing up and down the mountain, swinging on the vines, and enjoying the outdoor life through every season. Much of the antics of our trek up the mountain was about how accustomed to it, and incredibly fit Slobodan, at the age of 50 is. Lidija told us how even this past summer, young guys challenged Slobodan to soccer games with great boasting before the game and very little to say afterwards!

All along the way from the church to the lake to the castle and back, Slobodan spoke to every single person we met, encouraging them and joking with them in his natural out-going way. The joy of the Lord flows out from him to anyone within his line of sight and being in his presence – even with our limited conversational skills since he doesn’t speak English – was a pleasure itself!

Orahovica’s beautiful setting makes it a drawing place. All third graders from our part of Croatia attend a “nature week” there, which is part of the regular science curriculum of the schools. Both of our girls participated in this event with their classes when they were attending Croatian public school.

The Pentecostal church also has used the natural beauty of Orahovica to foster the spread of the gospel through summer camps it runs. Many of today’s church leaders point to the significance of their attendance at these camps decades ago when they were young people in their conversion and/or spiritual development.

Renovation of the camp facilities has been one of the major mission projects of the denomination during our tenure here in Croatia. The project was impressive because money was raised mostly from within the church in Croatia. Because it was largely self-funded, it took a long time for the money to come in and the work to be completed. Slobodan himself did much of the work after his secular job. During the four summers the renovations were underway, the summer camps continued on our seminary property. Our daughter, Valerie, was among the group that returned to the Orahovica property in the summer of 2010 even though the kitchen was not completed until this year.

Please pray for Slobodan and Lidija, for their ministry to the people of Orahovica, for the people of their church and for the camp ministry. Among the challenges they face is the huge problem of unemployment, which is leading many young people to leave the town. The lack of funds also is a huge burden as the church tries to reach out to those with little hope. Pray that God will supply everything they need so that the gospel can flourish for the glory of Jesus.
